Ode to the Bard

January 31, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | 5 Comments

If you are looking for a great quick read, try The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown.  Loved, loved, loved this book!  It is beautifully written with such depth of character development.  I felt like I personally knew each of the sisters.  After I finished the book, I found out that it was #2 on Amazon’s top books of January, 2011. (Check it out here http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000647531)

The story of the book really lies in the characters and they are characters-

The professor father who only speaks in Shakespearian prose.

The ill mother.

The three grown daughters- all of whom have unique idiosyncrasies and issues.  Two of the daughters have come home nominally to be with their sick mother but really because they ran away to home.  The third lives at home and is duty bound to keep running everyone’s lives.

Some snippets-

Family talk: “See, we love one another.  We just don’t happen to like one another very much.”

After a tough night at the bar: “What do you do when you are no longer the one worth watching? When there are women less beautiful, less intelligent, less versed in the art of the game who nonetheless can beat you at it simply because of their birth date?”

Cancer: “And the word “malignant” had entered our family’s vernacular.” “..another round of chemotherapy. Another round.  As if she were buying drinks.”

I highly recommend The Weird Sisters.  Now I’m reading You Know When the Men Are Gone by Siobhan Fallon.  I’m one hour into it and thus far it is really good.  Stay tuned on this one.

What are you reading and where are you going?

I’m reading The Entrepreneur Equation by Carol Roth. As a small business owner I’ve read many books but this book tops them all. She’s so blunt and tells you like it is. I’ve read the first few chapters and I’m sucked in.

I just finished this book today. I loved it. It both broke my heart and made me very happy. You don’t have to have sisters to enjoy this story.
