It’s All Relative

February 6, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | 4 Comments

I loved Wade Rouse’s previous book, Confessions of a Prep School Mommy Handler and was thrilled when he sent us his new book to review.  Rouse’s books are laugh out loud funny and poignant, all at the same time.

In his new memoir It’s All Relative: Two Families, Three Dogs, 34 Holidays, and 50 Boxes of Wine (A Memoir), Wade Rouse walks readers into his life through humorous family holiday anecdotes. Sometimes wickedly funny, sometimes wrenchingly sad, the always heartfelt Rouse shares his life as a gay man in a loving relationship. Fans of David Sedaris and Jen Lancaster will love this one!

Like expensive chocolate, I loved his mix of bitter and sweet. Here are my favorite quotes:

“In college I remained closed and tragically drunk, stringing along endless girls, dragging them to Valentine’s dances-them in red formals that longed to be hiked up, and me flirting with death by imbibing a punch full of red Kool-Aid and Everclear.”

“I passed out on a flight to Ireland and woke in the middle of the night, searching for my moisturizer and Purel, to find my father doing shots of Jagermeister with a group of college kids who asked for his phone number when we got off the plane.”

“There was once a time when there was no cancer, when these folks were just like me, and time was an endless commodity to be spent thoughtlessly, like pennies.”

“It may not be the Wailing Wall, Mom, but it is your home. I’ll try to get you to Jerusalem one day, but for now let this be your holy place.”

This book, debuting February 1st,  goes down easy, like box wine. Enjoy!  Wade is hilarious- his website is http://waderouse.com/content/index.asp

What are you reading and where are you going?

I haven’t read Wade Rouse, but those excerpts you posted got my attention. I can see why you describe this as “funny yet poignant” … and am laughing at the ‘box of wine,’ which brings back my own eye-rolling memories!
