If you have to be cooped up inside with solid ice outside for days on end (can you say stir crazy?), you have to have a good book. I was SO lucky that Jon Michaud sent me his upcoming book When Tito Loved Clara to review. Michaud is the head librarian at the New Yorker and a regular contributor to newyorker.com. The book comes out March 8, 2011- run to read it!
By page 11, the plot thickens with a very detailed Dominican family drama. Set in New York City, the story revolves around Clara and her husband, her sister Yunis who lives in her own Yuniverse, Yunis’ daughter Deysi and Tito, Clara’s long lost high school beau. Clara is struggling with infertility, managing her own life, a very hard childhood and taking ownership of all of her sister’s issues as well. Tito remained single and always thought of Clara as the one who got away.
About Yunis, Michaud writes, “The Yuniverse was a queendom rife with drama, anxiety and endless scamming.”
“It had been her poor grades, and inept use of contraception that led her to the place where she was now.”
The plot and character development in this book are DIVINE!! It is a page turner and throws curveballs throughout. The characters end up very intertwined in ways you would never predict. I love that!
I am hesitant to say more as there are so many page turning moments in the plot, I don’t want to ruin them. Suffice it to say that book clubs will LOVE this book as there is SO much to discuss. The ending is poignant as well and totally unexpected.
Let’s hope that Jon Michaud writes another book as good as When Tito Loved Clara soon.
What are you reading and where are you going?
