Typically, a book about divorce and an eating disorder would not get my attention. I read several strong reviews of Deep Down True by Juliette Fay and decided to download the sample onto the beloved Kindle.
The book is very well written and reads quickly. The characters are both lovable and REAL. You totally feel the kids’ pain over the divorce and you angst with the Mom over dating and dealing with her ex getting re-married. Fay intersperses slightly sarcastic humor throughout so very quickly, I found myself very much enjoying the read. A few favorite quotes:
When she ruefully admits to her dentist that she lost weight on the Divorce Diet and he asks how she is, she replies, “I’m still flossing.” “Good,” he said. ” Because nothing’s more important than proper dental hygiene when life starts throwing punches.”
“What magical shirt would give off that elusive scent of happy-busy-smart-fun while masking the fact that she was still a bit stunned by her single status ..”
“Motherhood, she was finding, was devoid of those little indicators of accomplishment and appreciation; being commened at a staff meeting, or complimented on a new pair of earrings, or invited to lunch by co-workers.” “She found herself wondering if she were any good at it.” What mother can’t relate to this!
This is a great book for Spring Break or a trip. You will read it in two days’ time and be glad you did. Enjoy!
Beware the ides of March!
What are you reading and where are you going?
