Ten Beach Road

May 12, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | No Comments

I stayed up late one night to finish the new Wendy Wax book, Ten Beach Road.   Clearly with Beach in the title, I was excited to read it.  I’ve been a fan of  Wax’ books for a while.  They are (using my coined term) Upper Chick Lit and are always a good read.  Ten Beach Road is no exception.

The premise of the book is that a Madoff type ran off with three women’s money.  As part of a settlement, the three women get joint ownership of a home on the Florida coast called Bella Flora.  The three women each go to Florida hoping to find an asset they can sell quickly to get some money.  Instead, they find a dilapidated mess on 150 feet of prime beach.  It becomes quickly apparent that refurbishment will yield much more money than selling as is or tearing it down.  Thus, the three women move into Bella Flora to renovate the home.

Quotes like these are the reason I like Wax’ books:

When discussing a gift from her mother in law, “Do you know what she gave me for Christmas this year?” “It was a book called “Extreme Makeover, Personal Edition: How to Reface Your “Cabinets” and Shore Up Your Sagging Structure.”

When Nicole, a professional matchmaker, meets with a client who wants a woman younger than 35, she writes the following on her note pad,”Sell by date- 35.”

This is a great summer read.  The characters are genuine and, while very different, form a sisterhood working on the house that is believable and endearing.  Wax captures emotions that I think are very realistic based on the financial meltdown our country has seen.

Put on sunscreen and read Ten Beach Road.

The Berkley Publishing Group provided a review copy of this book for this post.  All opinions are my own.

What are you reading and where are you going?
