Don’t you love it when you read a book and it makes you laugh out loud? I feel this way about today’s guest post:
I am thrilled to welcome bestselling author Teresa Medeiros to Great Thoughts today. I recently reviewed and loved her book Goodnight Tweetheart- read my review here. I think you’ll see from the post below why I think Teresa is fabulous!
Here’s Teresa Medeiros:
I was so very excited when Andrea invited me to blog for Great Thoughts! Until it occurred to me that I wasn’t sure if I still had any great thoughts. What I do have are text messages, e-mails, Facebook status updates, website newsletters and a whole lot of tweets (18,351 since the summer of 2009 to be exact, which I believe would equate to approximately 2.29 full length novels.)
These days most of my thoughts come in pithy sound bytes pondering the Seinfeldian absurdities of life or philosophical ruminations on why Maks doesn’t rip off his shirt during every one of his performances on DANCING WITH THE STARS. (Except when I’m retweeting Lord Voldemort, of course. He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named has such a droll sense of humor!) So as I was struggling to dredge up some Great Thoughts worthy of such a deeply meaningful blog, this is what popped into my head instead:
My next career plan is going to be hawking reverse mortgages on late night TV.
So today is EAT WHAT YOU WANT DAY? Every day at my house is EAT WHAT YOU WANT DAY.
Am I the only one who didn’t know May was Zombie Appreciation Month? Brains for dinner tonight!
It occurred to me that the only time I’m actually allowed to entertain Great Thoughts in this mundane era of constant communication is when I’m working on one of my novels. I can write deliciously sprawling sentences that contain more than 140 characters! I can use evocative words that haven’t been used since D. H. Lawrence wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover! I never have to abbreviate “night” as “nite” or worry that my iPhone is going to AutoCorrect my latest text message to my church secretary into accidental pornography!
Of course if that’s so, then you’re probably wondering why I decided to tell my latest story primarily in tweets. In Goodnight Tweetheart my cynical protagonist Mark Baynard describes Twitter as a “perpetual cocktail party where everyone is talking at once but nobody is saying anything”, which could describe our entire culture at this particular moment in time. But when he meets Abby Donovan, a blocked writer who just happens to be a former Oprah book club pick, they begin to slowly bare not only their innermost thoughts but their hearts and souls as well. At least Abby believes Mark is baring his soul until she discovers he’s hiding a secret that could change both of their lives forever. This revelation forces both of them to explore a question near and dear to my own heart—Is it possible for something lasting to be forged in this era of instant communication?
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go. I just got a text from He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and he wants to do lunch. Or me. AutoCorrect makes it difficult to tell the difference.

Oh, yes, the season of texts and tweets! While a part of me finds the whole thing fascinating, I do ponder the confusion that can ensue when people misunderstand these quick communiques.
Thanks for putting a lighter twist on things!
