I love Jennifer Weiner’s books so I was THRILLED to receive a review copy of Then Came You. (I had been stalking her publicist for it!) It comes out on July 12th and I highly recommend it.
This is the story of three women whose lives become intertwined. The chapters alternate to each woman’s story. The book tackles the difficult topic of surrogacy and it’s legal and emotional consequences. I don’t want to reveal too much of the story except to say that having read all of Weiner’s books, I think this is her best by far.
As always, Weiner’s writing is both funny and poignant:
“We had tickets to the opera (I guzzled Red Bull in the ladies’ room to keep from dozing off during the arias.)”
“I tasted old pennies in my mouth, and felt a strange mixture of excitement and regret… except regret wasn’t exactly the right word. Pre-gret was more like it- the sadness you could feel over something that hasn’t happened yet.”
To the surrogate mother, the trophy wife says, “You’re not just the Tupperware, you know.”
“…-a first wife. Seeing one of those was sort of like glimpsing a rare bird or monkey, a member of the endangered species, upright and uncaged and walking among us.”
“I knew exactly how I must have looked to her: too pretty, too thin, too young. I might as well have been wearing a tiara that spelled out the words TROPHY WIFE in flashing neon bulbs above my head.”
engleman&co provided a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
What are you reading and where are you going?

I’ve never read any of her books! I’ve heard a lot about her though. Currently, I’m reading a book my Chantel Hobbs, but finally picked up Harry Potter for the first time today.

I’m a big fan of Weiner, and my copy of Then Came You will be coming next week. I think I’ve read all of her books…I do have a short story collection of hers on my stacks that I haven’t read yet.
Thanks for sharing those lines….
Here’s MY SUNDAY SALON POST
I love these excerpts that you’ve shared! Haven’t we all had our share of “pre-gret?!”
I’m looking forward to reading this book. Loved the teaser lines you shared.
I can’t wait to read it! I’m going to order a copy today!
I have not read her books, but will now. I am always late in reading books that come out, I wait for paperback. Unless it’s a Jan Karon book. Thank you for sharing this review. I am currently reading Lonely Hearts and Lost Dogs, just finished Winter Garden and am waiting for an Elizabeth Gilbert book to show up in the mail. Happy readings!\
Jennifer Weiner has been one of my favorite authors since I read “Good in Bed” oh so many years ago! I’m really excited about her new book, and your review makes me want to snatch my copy as soon as it comes out tomorrow!
