The Language of Flowers

August 20, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | 5 Comments

I’ve just finished reading The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.  What a great love story!  It comes out today and is a must read!

In this story the main character, Victoria Jones has been failed by the world since she was born.  Never shown love, and tossed through the foster care system.  Until one day, seemingly her last chance at everything a child should have, a family, love, security, she finds herself in a good home and all is within reach.  Tragically that chance vanishes and Victoria drops into the abyss labeled an unadoptable ward of the state.

The one gift she keeps from this last chance is a new language – the language of flowers.  It is through this gift of understanding the meaning of each flower, and how to use flowers to communicate with others that Victoria can find her way to happiness.

Wait a minute you say, you thought it was a love story?  Well – the English language only has the word love, which is not specific enough, perhaps I should have said it’s a story of cactus, myrtle, red roses, tulips, and yellow roses too.  But then, you’ll need to read the book to know what I mean.

Ballantine Bantam Dell provided a review copy of this book for this post.  All opinions are my own.

What are you reading and where are you going?

I have been wanting to read this one. Not only because I’m a sucker for lost chances, second chances, and making something out of nothing…but also because of the three decades I spent as a social worker, trying to make things happen despite a system that seems to thrive on preventing that very thing.

This one sounds awesome! And, I understand, the author was a foster parent, so she would have an “insider’s view” of how things work (and don’t work).

I wasn’t sure what to think about this one, but I really liked it. I’m working on my review for later in the week. Such a nice surprise – and by that, I mean that it wasn’t sugary sweet like I thought it would be.
