In order to show you why I laughed out loud while reading Syd Arthur by Ellen Frankel, here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
“Of course, when your kids are little the million little things become a zillion little things, and having a pap smear actually begins counting as some “quiet time,” I mean, just think about it. In the doctor’s office there’s usually coffee and some good gossip magazines. Then you get your own room where you get to lie down and put your feet up. So really, it’s practically a spa day.”
“Oh my God, you all have CRS? What’s that?”
“Can’t Remember Shit,” we say in unison.”
“and the truth is, Jodi and I become easy and slutty once we’ve kicked back a few drinks. Not easy and slutty in the sexual way, but in the dessert way.” “Gary and Dave order only coffee. They’ve gone evangelical on us.”
Regarding Cheerios, ” The commercial says it lowers cholesterol, so I figure it’s more medicine than food and therefore the calories don’t count.”
Syd Arthur is a forty something empty nester who is clearly searching for something. She is a nice Jewish girl from a nice family who has a lovely husband and college aged daughter. This book is her quest to figure herself out. She tries yoga, yoga retreats and Buddhism (and the gift shops associated with each) all to the dismay of her famiy and her Mah Jong group. But she finally figures out who she is!
This is a “happy”- a book that shows you not to take yourself too seriously. Enjoy!
What are you reading and where are you going?

That books sounds funny. She has a point about the Dr’s office you have to admit.
Fantastic! I’m going to get this one. I’m in the process of starting to write a book of essays and these are the themes I will be exploring. It’s all about trying to find yourself. I’m not sure if we ever do but laughing at the journey is half the fun.
Oooo, I like this character!
