Fall Reading Fest

November 12, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | 4 Comments

Thus far, the Fall Season has brought cooler temperatures and great reads!  Here is a sample of what I’ve been reading:

1. Wings: A Novel of World War II Flygirls by Karl Friedrich- If you follow this site, you know that I really enjoy books set during World War II.  This novel is based on true stories of the female pilots who transported planes domestically while the male pilots were away at war.  The book is a wonderful blend of fiction and real stories.  It offers a bit of intrigue, a bit of romance and alot of female determination.  Friedrich does an admirable job showing the prejudices against the women pilots and how hard they were to overcome.

2 .Sunset Bridge (Happiness Key) by Emilie Richards- This is a great “beach lit” book- ie, I wish I had been on a beach while I read it.  Divorcee moves to Florida after wicked divorce and buys five beach cottages.  The book is the story of those who live in the cottages.  I didn’t know that this was the third book in the Happiness Key trilogy.  I will be going back to read books 1 and 2 on my next vacation.

3. The Girl in the Garden by Kamala Nair- This book really is a dark fairy tale.  An Indian woman remembers a trip of her childhood when her mother took her back to her home.  At that home, she meets her cousins, grandmother and aunts and uncle.  She soon realizes there is a secret in the garden.  I don’t typically read mysteries or dark stories but this is a book you cannot put down once you start.

What are you reading and where are you going?

Hi Andrea! I’m reading LITTLE GALE GUMBO by Erika Marks and THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson. The second book is a non-fiction about the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893 and a serial killer that used the fair to lure his victims. Love GUMBO and still trying to get into DEVIL.

Your books look really interesting. I’ll have to check them out.

I’ve had a good week, and I’m getting ready to read The Strangers on Montagu Street, the third Karen White book in the Tradd Street trilogy.

Nice selection of books, Andrea. As soon as I finish editing my new novel, I’ll be attacking my TBR pile. I’m eager to read The Dovekeepers and have that at the top of my list.

Happy Sunday to you and yours!

Looks like I’ll need to add Wings & The Girl in the Garden to my Need to Read list! I love Indian fiction & have always been drawn to it. I’ve got such a long Need to Read list, but adding to it just means I’ll never be short on words to devour! :> Thanks!
