Political Fiction

November 26, 2011 | by Great Thoughts | Great Thoughts | 1 Comment

I am something of a politics junkie. I like to follow candidates from both parties and never cease to be amazed by their foibles.  Here are two recent novels that appealed to the political junkie in me:

1. The GQ Candidate by Keli Goff-  Luke Cooper becomes the Governor of Michigan after a sex scandal brought down his predecessor.  Luke is black and Jewish by virtue of his adopted parents.   Because of his good looks, he is called the “GQ Candidate.”

And, you guessed it, he runs for President.  The book is obviously very loosely based on Obama’s campaign.  It includes scandals caused by Luke’s friends and his ambivalent wife.  Overall, this was a good light read that does not end as you expect.

2. It’s Classified by Nicolle Wallace-  This book is the sequel to Wallace’s first, Eighteen Acres.  (I included Eighteen Acres on the “I Loved Them” list of 2010 here.) I thoroughly enjoyed this book as much as the first!  The book picks up the story of Charlotte Patterson’s presidency and has her best friend, Melanie, serving as her Secretary of Defense.  Tara Meyers, the vice president, encounters severe personal issues that Dale, the communications advisor, must address.

Tara’s downward spiral into depression was especially well written.  You could actually feel her pain and see how easily someone could become ill.  I eagerly look forward to Wallace’s future books.

What are you reading and where are you going?
