I “met” the author of Monarch Beach, Anita Hughes, on Twitter. I was intrigued to find out that she lives in Dana Point, California. We go there every summer and stay at The St. Regis Monarch Beach. (Posts here and here on The St. Regis and on Dana Point.) Thus, I could not wait to read this book. I read it back in February and finished it in one day.
Hughes will be an author to watch- her writing channels Teresa Medeiros and Danielle Steele. Watch out world- a serious new author has joined us!
The book is the story of a San Francisco heiress, Amanda, who marries the dashing French chef. She is young and inexperienced but deeply in love. They make a life together and have a wonderful son but alas she discovers that he is cheating on her and has been for the decade of their marriage.
To my delight, Amanda’s mother, Grace, insists that Amanda and her son, Max, spend the summer with her in the Presidential Suite at The St. Regis Monarch Beach. (For the record, we stay in one room for just a few nights. Now, I really want to see the Presidential Suite.) How can you not love any book where the protagonist gets to spend several months in a 5 star hotel! She had me at Presidential Suite!
A few quotes:
“Married for ten years, mother to a fantastic eight-year-old son, never suspecting that when Andre went to the restaurant on Tuesdays to “”do the books” he was also doing the chef.”
In describing that Amanda’s parent’s married later in life, Hughes’ writes, “My mother was a self-described “debutante left on the shelf.”
There is a funny scene late in the book involving texts/sexts. I won’t spoil it but to say I laughed out loud.
This is a great summer book for the beach bag!
St. Martin’s Press provided a review copy of this book via Net Galley. All opinions are my own.
