Let’s Talk Beach
This is the time of year that I CRAVE sun and a vacation so Let’s Talk Beach! In a land before children long, long ago, my husband and I used to spend the first week of the year in Hawaii or The Caribbean. Then, the year I became pregnant with twins, my doctor had the audacity to say that I couldn’t travel that winter. Since then, I spend January reminiscing about the trips of days gone by.
Now the majority of our travel involves the kids. Given that they were born to travel snobs, my girls are spoiled by good hotels and nice locales. You know your kids have traveled too well when your then five year old runs into every hotel room looking for a phone in the potty. After traveling on business for two decades, we racked up zillions of air miles and hotel points so we had kids and continued to travel well.
Since I am dreaming of sun, I thought I’d share one of our favorite beach retreats-
Marriott Marco Island
We went to this hotel right after my mother passed away, all in dire need of a change of pace. I’d heard of the hotel for years from a good friend/fellow travel snob. We literally booked it less than two weeks in advance and took off. Marco Island is a quiet little place with simple restaurants and the cutest pastel houses. You fly to Fort Meyers and drive 30 minutes onto Marco Island.
What a wonderful place to rejuvenate! This was definitely one of our best family trips. In terms of service and facilities, this easily could be a Ritz Carlton or St. Regis. The rooms, food and service were simply fabulous. It is laid back and not pretentious. And, oh the beach! The beach had the best shells we’ve ever seen. You reserve your own cabana on the beach and simply sit and stare at beautiful water. There is a fabulous family style Italian restaurant that the kids loved. The ice cream shop in the lobby was a big hit too.
We will definitely be going back there!
