I’ve often thought that the British phrase “On Holiday” sounds SO much more delightful than the American “vacation.” On holiday, to me, is a much more joyful term that connotes celebrating versus vacation whereby you “vacate” from work. I want to celebrate, not vacate!
After the ridiculous amount of ice and snow we have had, I am SO in the mood to go On Holiday. This time of year, I crave sunshine and warmth. (Ok, truth be told, I crave warmth sunshine all year long!) In the U.S., the warmest place in the winter is Florida. I’ve been to Florida a zillion times. A few favorites:
-
Fort Myers/Marco Island- My fav! Fabulous beach and casual locale. Great shells!
-
West Palm Beach- Ooh la la- ridiculously nice hotels and glorious oceanfront.
-
Orlando/Disney- Love, love, love the House of Mouse- we’ve been WAY too many times but for we, the parents, love it as much as the kids.
-
Miami/South Beach- Glamorous and fun. Strong need for designer sunglasses!
-
St. Petersburg- Quiet and chic- great beach!
If you are in the U.K., you are sorely in need of warmth and sun right now. I remember my junior winter semester spent in jolly ol’ London. Being a Texas girl, I naturally assumed that college would be cancelled on a snow day. My British brethren laughed out loud as they told me to bundle up and go to school.
For our British friends and readers, I suggest you immediately go to Ocean Florida’s website and book a Holiday to get out of the cold! Their website is here and they can easily book a trip to Florida for you at a host of hotels. I’ve checked out their site and was delighted to see many of my favorite hotels on their list. Also, they have some GREAT last minute air/hotel specials right now at very inexpensive prices. They also can send you on a cruise to ski if you love the cold or to Vegas and Florida! Go book your trip at once!
Enjoy being On Holiday!

I could not agree more with the “Holiday” nomenclature!! We heard it all the time when we lived in Australia and it always made me want to smile. “Vacation” just doesn’t really sound that interesting.

I totally agree, Holiday sound so much nicer, and Florida is the place to go!
The small town in southern Spain I lived in for several years was a big “holiday” spot for the Brits. It took me forever to figure out that, no the British didn’t have 2,547 holidays but that “holiday” meant vacation. I’m a little slow I guess. Though you don’t have to tell me twice to get my frozen tail to Florida. We were down there in December and it was lovely.
I need a holiday!! Florida sounds great right now, especially since my toes are freezing!!
oh my goodness – thought I was the only one who loved HOLIDAY – lol!! thanks for the laugh
I’m totally ready for an extended HOLIDAY, and yes Florida would be perfect! Great post.
I definitely could use a trip to Florida right about now! XOX
To me, “holiday” means that any time you spend with your friends &/or family is a “holiday.” It’s a very romantic concept, imo. Ironically, if I could go off on holiday, I would be heading to Mighty Blighty.
