This beautifully written book is a World War II tale set in British Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Leroy’s depiction of a romance between a German soldier, Captain Lehmann, and Vivienne de la Mare is both believable and heart wrenching And, don’t we love the protagonist’s name, Vivienne del la Mare, Vivienne of the sea.
A novel full of grand passion and intensity, The Soldier’s Wife asks “What would you do for your family?” “What should you do for a stranger?” and “What would you do for love?”
A few excerpts of my review via quotes from the book:
Coffee being a scarce luxury during the war, Captain Lehmann says, “How you wrap your hands around the cup. This is a special moment for you. A peaceful moment.”
“.. and the room is briefly festive with laughter, as though our lives are normal again, as though the war isn’t happening. A bud of gratitude opens out in my mind- gratitude to Captain Lehmann, for making my children’s eye shine, for filling our house with laughter.”
“There are very few of us, Vivienne, who were designed for such times.”
“I’m not a hero, Vivienne,” he says. “I want to come through this war alive. I want to see my son again.”
And, let me just say, read all the way to the end as the ending is wonderful!!
I can’t wait to share this book with you. You’ll be so glad you did. Please comment here to be entered to win a copy of this amazing book!
