I am not a big baseball fan so I did not know what to expect of this book. I love Grisham’s books so I dove in and.. read all 194 pages in one sitting! Yes, it’s that good! Calico Joe is the story of Joe Castle, the 1973 boy wonder of American baseball- the greatest rookie anyone had seen. He hit homerun after homerun and always tipped his hat politely afterwards. Joe is a quiet soul, content to play baseball without needing the fame.
Unfortunately, Joe’s streak comes to an end quickly. The book is SO good that I don’t want to spoil it so I’ll just say that Warren, another player wrongs Joe and Warren’s son decides to right the wrong.
A few of my favorite quotes:
“He looked deep into center field and quickly wiped a tear from his cheek. A camera caught it… Joe Castle, standing alone on second base and alone in the record book, now a legend, was human enough to show emotion.”
“After his first two or three wives, Warren began marrying for money instead of looks and lust.”
His son thinks, “I wonder if Warren remembers all the things I remember.”
“A lot of people die in Florida, and many are retirees without deep roots in their communities. Because of this, the burial business is efficient and streamlined.”
“The attire is Florida geezer casual- a lot of sandals and not a single jacket or tie.”
This is simply a must-read for Spring. Just leave a comment here for a chance to win one of 5 copies.
