I tripped on this book by reading one of my favorite blogs, Girlfriends Book Club. Each day, a different author writes a post. Upon reading Wendy Tokunaga’s post, I immediately downloaded His Wife and Daughters. I am a lover of all things political so this book sounded right up my alley. (I even did a post last year titled Political Fiction.)
And, this book is only $2.99 on Kindle and free for Kindle Prime Members- a bargain!
The book is similar to the Gary Condit/ Chandra Levy story except here the young woman doesn’t die (thankfully) but turns up alive. The politician’s career is over though. In 1988, Congressman Dan Brath is serving the State of California and has a devoted wife and two daughters. He is accused of having an affair with a 19 year old intern who disappears.
The book details the aftermath of the scandal on Brath’s family. His daughters suffer greatly from the dysfuction of having a high profile father accused and a weak mother. I don’t want to give away too much but will say- READ THE BOOK- THE ENDING ROCKS! I totaly did not expect or anticipate where Tokunaga takes the ending. Wow! The ending has convinced me to read all of the author’s other books.
A Few Quotes
“next to her I must have seemed faded, a faint daguerreotype, in lackluster black pants, a gray cardigan I now realized shouted frumpy, and an unruly brown bob that refused to make a commitment to curly or straight.”
Of the former intern, Tokunaga writes, “now at nearly forty she qualifies as- what do you call them? A MILF? A cougar?”
An excellent read!
