Summer reading is the best, isn’t it? Some of my favorite authors tend to publish in the summer- Jennifer Weiner, Holly Chamberlin, Emily Giffin, Erin Hildebrand, etc. The new Emily Giffin, Where We Belong, is wonderful, as expected.
I’m a HUGE Giffin fan. Her book, Heart of the Matter was one of my favorites of 2010. This book doesn’t come out until July 24th– go preorder right now as you will want to read it immediately!
From the publisher, “Marian Caldwell is a thirty-six year old television producer, living her dream in New York City. But one night, Marian answers a knock on the door . . . only to find Kirby Rose, an eighteen-year-old girl with a key to a past that Marian thought she had sealed off forever. For the precocious and determined Kirby, the encounter will spur a process of discovery that ushers her across the threshold of adulthood, forcing her to re-evaluate her family and future in a wise and bittersweet light.”
Giffin’s writing is as always crisp and relatable. Of Marian’s boyfriend, Marian thinks, “It’s one of the many things I admire about him- his fine taste coupled with his firm belief that life is too short for unexceptional wine. Unexceptional anything really.”
And the beautiful ending, “For now, I will sit alone in this hotel bar in St. Louis and finish my wine. It is not what I planned- this day, this moment, these unlikely relationships, both old and new. Yet I feel overcome with peace and certainty that, for once, I am exacty where I should be.”
St. Martin’s Press provided a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
What are you reading and where are you going?
Giffin is an author I haven’t read yet but have heard a lot about. I need to catch up!
