Word on the Street 5/5/17
- Mothers and Other Strangers by Gina Sorell, a beautiful debut novel featured in the May issue of Good Housekeeping with a personal essay and book recommendation came out recently. “My father proposed to my mother at gunpoint when she was nineteen, and knowing that she was already pregnant with a dead man’s child, she accepted.” Thus begins this riveting story of a woman’s quest to understand her recently deceased mother, a glamorous, cruel narcissist who left her only child an inheritance of debts, threats, and mysteries. Don’t start it late at night as you will be up all night reading!
- The Language of Solitude by Jan-Philipp Sendker is a page-turner of suspense set against the backdrop of a corrupt China, and a beautifully drawn exploration into the risks and rewards of human connection and the complexity of love.
- This coming week, the following books will release:
–The Book of Summer by Michelle Gable. I think this literally is THE book of Summer 2017. I LOVED every page. Gable’s writing goes to a whole new level with this book. Gable channeled her inner Beatriz Williams with this one. Need I say more? Read it!
-Crossing the Street by Molly D. Campbell is such a delightful book! On one level it is just downright funny. On a deeper level, the relationships between the odd array of characters is so poignant that you go from laughing out loud to teary. Only Molly Campbell could deftly have two millennials (one of who writes erotica as it pays well) be best friends with an octogenarian who is raising her 8 year old great granddaughter (the greatest kid ever) while her grandson is deployed overseas. Buy this book ASAP!
–Saints for All Seasons by J. Courtney Sullivan looks to be fabulous. I love all of her prior work so very much look forward to reading this.
- Crazy Rich Asians’ series author, Kevin Kwan, announced HUGE news yesterday. He is writing a TV series. As I am his groupie, I will be peeled to my TV for this one! Read about it here.
The British Are Coming
The Grand Doyenne British authors, that is!
The amazing Barbara Taylor Bradford has a new book coming this Fall titled Secrets of Cavendon. I am coveting this fur stole!
Look at the next Penny Vincenzi cover for A Question of Trust publishing in the UK in October:
On May 16th and 17th, Bonhams will auction the $3 million, 1,000-lot estate of internationally celebrated author Jackie Collins. There will also be an online only auction from May 18 for two weeks with many more ultra glam items. If you are a devoted Jackie fan, do check out the auction online. It’s a beautiful celebration of the Lady Boss herself! You can view the full catalog here.
Also, portions of proceeds from the sale of some Jackie’s much beloved art will benefit nonprofit organizations dedicated to women and girls.
I love that they are calling it A Life in Chapters. Feel free to bid on this ring for me, ok?
