The Forever Summer by Jamie Brenner comes out in paperback TODAY. To celebrate, my friends at publisher Little Brown are offering 10 copies to giveaway to lucky winners in the U.S. Isn’t the paperback cover Summer PERFECTION? I’d like to be laying on that beach right now by the way. The Forever Summer was one of my Top Books of 2017. I’ll go ahead and say that The Husband Hour, Brenner’s next book which comes out on 4/24/18, will be in the Top Books of 2018 list- she has outdone herself with this book!
A Note From Jamie Brenner
Hi Great Thoughts!
I’m excited to share the paperback release of The Forever Summer with you! This is my first paperback release day; The Forever Summer gave me a lot of “firsts” when it came to writing and publishing. This book actually changed the way I think about storytelling. When I began The Forever Summer, my starting point was the idea of two young women who discover they are half-sisters and their lives are turned upside down. At first, I assumed this would be another Manhattan story; My previous novels were set in New York City. The Gin Lovers was a historical family drama taking place in the 1920s. My next novel, The Wedding Sisters, was contemporary and centered around an Upper East Side family coming apart at the seams as they planned for three weddings at the same time. But as I began plotting The Forever Summer, I realized this book was taking me out of my geographic comfort zone; the women needed to go on a road trip, some journey to help them bond. But a trip to where? Around the time I was trying to put the pieces of this story together, I watched the CBS Sunday Morning show and they did a segment on Provincetown, Massachusetts. The remote beach town looked like the perfect place for a novel about family and secrets, so I spent made the trip. It turned out, Provincetown gave me so much more than a setting for The Forever Summer. Provincetown, filled with art, artists, quaint B&B’s, cafes, water views, nature preserves, and the most warm, quirky, and wonderful people you can imagine, came to define this book in every way. Ultimately, The Forever Summer looked and felt different than my other novels, and I knew that beach towns were places I wanted to inhabit creatively for my future books (The Husband Hour, set at the Jersey Shore, publishes April 24). The Forever Summer taught me that place can shape a novel as much as characters or plot. The process of writing The Forever Summer was a gift to me creatively; it set me on my path writing “beach reads” and for that reason it’s a book that will always be close to my heart. I hope you enjoy this story and armchair vacation to Provincetown as much as I enjoyed writing it.
